Bass, Van Hollen to reintroduce bill to reform handling of nonviolent 911 calls


During the virtual press call, Von Hollen said that too often calls that come in through 911 do not require a use of force response, and yet, too often, they result in unnecessary escalation and unjust deaths.
The bill was initially introduced in the waning days of the last session of Congress but failed to gain any traction.

It will be reintroduced next week in the Senate and the week after that in the House, Van Hollen said. 
“What this bill is designed to do,” the senator continued, “is provide federal incentives in the form of grants to cities and other local jurisdictions to develop alternatives to police response when an alternative response is more appropriate … like mental health situations or substance use disorder crises, or when people are checking in for health and safety.” ....

Interconnectedness of Illegal Wildlife Trade and COVID-19


Since its outbreak, the COVID-19 pandemic’s interlinkages with illegal wildlife trade have caught a lot of attention and been touted as a primary cause. Dwelling on the carrier species of coronavirus that have been implicated and the channels of zoonotic spillover, the policies implemented to curb bushmeat consumption with incomplete ramifications to curb illegal wildlife markets are critiqued. The urgent need to address the problem is highlighted, requiring significant enforcement efforts at the local and national level along with transnational cooperation to make them successful. There is a need for alternative coordinated solutions for the COVID-19 vaccine which ironically finds its origin in a wildlife product. ....
