City Comptroller and mayoral candidate Scott Stringer recently unveiled a 50-page blueprint for a new approach to public safety.
Stringer’s plan, which builds on his June 2020 analysis of the City Police Department budget, would move responsibilities away from the NYPD, address serious crime and the recent increase in shootings, improve accountability and civilian oversight of the NYPD, and reinvest police dollars into communities.
“To keep all New Yorkers truly safe, we must confront the structural racism that is embedded in our criminal legal system, and we must act decisively and creatively to put a stop to the rise of violence in our city. We must transform the City’s approach to public safety, and this report is a blueprint for that transformation,” Stringer said. ....

Pols Call on City and State to Expand Holocaust Education, Hate Crime Awareness in Schools

“The egregious display of anti-Semitism during the attack on our nation’s Capitol and uptick in hate crimes around our city are a wake-up call that we must re-commit to educating our young people on the dangers of prejudice and bigotry,” Comptroller Stringer said.

City Comptroller Scott Stringer and Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D-Flushing) on Thursday called on the State and City to expand Holocaust education and hate crime awareness and prevention in middle and high schools to combat discrimination and religious intolerance.
Stringer and Rozic proposed:
The State Education Department and the City Department of Education to survey all middle and high schools’ compliance with teaching Holocaust education in grades 8, 10, and 11, as called for in Rozic’s legislation, Assembly Bill A472, which she introduced a year ago. ....

New York City Pension Trustees Voted to Divest Estimated $4 Billion in Fossil Fuel Securities

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Comptroller Scott M. Stringer, along with trustees of two of the City’s pension funds, announced these funds have voted to divest their portfolios of an estimated US$ 4 billion from securities related to fossil fuel companies. The divestment, expected to be one of the largest in the world, will address the significant financial and environmental risks that these fossil fuel holdings pose to the funds. In 2018, New York City became the first major city in the nation to commit to divesting major public pension funds from fossil fuel reserve companies. Since the initial announcement hundreds of other institutions, governments, and entities have joined this commitment. ....
