lahaina is now contained. the pulehu fire, in the middle of the island, is about 70% contained. and officials are also dealing with a third fire in upcountry maui, with no estimate on its containment. in just over four days, the fires have burned roughly 2,000 acres, and have destroyed more than 1,000 buildings. these are images from the historic town of lahaina, which was hardest hit. local officials are allowing residents and tourists back into the town, but a nightly curfew is in place. we are now beginning to learn about the harrowing stories of survivors — like this one, where one family was forced tojump into the ocean to escape the flames. the ocean almost dragged my kids away a few times. but, yeah, we stuck together, we held on. i said, "we're not going to die," and we're here, we're alive. an unprecedented logistical

dying down. interestingly, that's the international dateline. when it get to the east of it, it's called a typhoon. same storm, just a different naming convention. this fire now at this point 80 fatalities x that is the second deadliest fire we've had anywhere in the u.s. five years ago, 2018, in paradise, california, we've talked a lot about that storm -- that fire. burned most of the town and caused 88 payalties, but that's -- fatalities, and that's where we are right now. we'll see the that number changes. fires in two different areas in maui. green on the north and east side of these storms, that's the windward island, that's where all the moisture comes in, generally that's where most of the rain is, and the other side of it is kind of a rain shadow, drier conditions. up country, that's this spot right there, most of the fires are there, about 85% containment on those fires in the lahaina area. so not completely done with those fires.

the firefighting effort. compared to where they were in the heat of the battle, and there is lahaina, with all of the fire hot spots picked up by satellite. here is where we are now. much, much better, saying now 80% containment for these fires. still, severe drought especially in this orange area. that's downwind of haleakala on the east side of maui. 16% in drought, severe drought. that was only 5% last week. an these numbers are tallied week by week by week and put out every thursday. so here is how it works here. a little science class. all the wind and all the rain and humidity come in and bump up against the east sides of these volcanos. and it rains up here. but then all of the sudden when that comes back down the hill, it dries out. and it has been very dry for very long. that's why we're in drought. and that's the wind that caused all of these fires here across maui county. we could see some showers in some spots, but usually, the rain at this time of year falls

but the speed of this. the escape routes are so limited. you have the upcountry, mountainsides and ocean and a few roads in between. once the traffic was backed up there, people nowhere to go. i talked to one gentleman, bill, famous art gallery owner here, who escaped his gallery on a motorcycle. he thinks that made all the difference because he was able to go around some of the cars. >> bill weir, we appreciate your reporting. we will keep watching throughout the day as the sun comes up there and they go into some of the buildings. >> joining us is a retired chief of the maui fire department, lionel man tall vo. thank you for being with us. i want to start here with what we are learning about alerts and warnings. you say there have been fires like this before. they were able to have been contained. how do the alerts and warnings play into the containment and minimizing the damage and were there enough here?

>> what's your sense of the greatest need in the affected areas right now? >> yeah, so as a sort of local nonprofit we are -- we are waiting for the approval to be able to access the areas that we can drive our trailer that has showers and laundry and hygiene items, like we're waiting to access those areas of greatest need. so to be honest we don't know. the scope is not clear. this is going to be an unbelievable recovery, but, john, the fires are still raging here. there's not 100% containment. there's three different wildfires and so we're still in the middle of this thing, but from a local level, as fema comes in and as we get all of this help, like please just buoy up with the local leaders here, the local reporters because they're here, they know the terrain, they know the communities. it's a very unique place here,

but, remember, it was hurricane dora in combination with this high-pressure system that put the strong winds funneling across the islands. one thing interesting to note, we have the ability to detect the hot spots. during the height of the wildfire event, here's the up country, here's lahaina. look at as we fast forward to present moment, those hot spots have basically diminished across the entire island. we have an 80% containment on the lahaina fire. again, with the exception of those hot spots and flare-ups that are still ongoing for that area. in terms of rainfall, we could use it, but it's unlikely that we'll get it because of the leeward side where lahaina is located. the majority of the rainfall will be across the higher elevations and on the east-facing slopes. >> thank you for that update. kate? >> coming up for us, a military shakeup in ukraine. president zelenskyy is dismissed all officials in charge of regional military recruitment centers. why?

containment of this fire? our reporting is that they are still raging. do firefighters have a handle on this? >> again, we're not on maui, we're on oahu. at one of the meetings earlier, it is our understanding that the fires are not totally contained but they are not blazing like they were last night because the winds have died down. maui fire department, the chief and his team, have been doing an incredible job given the circumstances. we couldn't get the helicopters up because of the wind, but now that the wind has subsided, they are working on the dumps with water out to the affected areas. >> that is a very helpful update. thank you and good luck to everyone there. >> thank you. thank you very much for getting the message out to your viewers that hawaii is open. >> ahead we'll be joined by a

first responders into maui. now that we have daylight, emergency crews will go airborne and try to get a better sense of containment figures to give more of a view of how much work has been done and how much work they have left to go, alex. >> mike valerio, thank you for all of your reporting through the court of the night. let's talk about this with angus mcilvie, and to note, he lost his home as well as other residents. we're so sorry what you have gone through. can you tell us about your experience? >> thank you for having me on. people are just shell-shocked in

three of those fires, pretty much well contained -- the fire, we have some containment on there, however we do still have firefighters out there who still i'm hesitant to say we have it completely under control. the highway is still closed from mile markler 6 to 17. as far as resort fire, that is still being actively fought right now. i have just got word before going on that the -- that they opened the highway that was closed. so, we're still going and in that area. so, still under a red flag warning and we see that the winds coming up is very possible for planes to get sent out. we think we almost have things put out. but right now, firefighters are
