Por primera vez desde que se recogen datos, en 2019 China emitió más gases de efecto invernadero que la suma de todos los países desarrollados. Según el informe publicado en mayo por Rhodium Group, el gigante asiático superó los 14.000 millones de toneladas, lo cual supone un 27% del total. Medidas por habitante, esas emisiones nocivas todavía están ligeramente por debajo de la media de la OCDE, pero, mientras las de este último grupo llevan reduciéndose constantemente en la última década debido a la transición energética iniciada sobre todo en Europa, las de China han pasado de 6 toneladas de CO2 por habitante en 2005 a más de 11 toneladas.
