COVID-19 surge: Bihar, U.P., Delhi top list of deaths among doctors in second wave, says IMA


“While last year we lost nearly 730 doctors across India, this year in a short period of time we have lost 244 doctors. The second wave is proving extremely fatal for all and especially those at the forefront of the battle. We have to actively increase vaccination cover among the medical staff to ensure that they have protection against the virus,’’ said IMA president J.A. Jayalal.
The following are the figures of fatalities according to the IMA registry: Andhra Pradesh (21), Telangana (19), Maharashtra (13), Tamil Nadu (10), Karnataka and Odisha (8 each), Madhya Pradesh (5), Chhattisgarh and Jammu and Kashmir (3 each), Assam, Gujarat, Haryana and Kerala (2 each) and Goa (1).

The first batch of the adjunct COVID therapy drug, 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) — developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) along with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL), Hyderabad — was on Monday released for emergency use. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh formally handed over the drug to Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan.
“One box each of the sachets of the drug were handed over to Dr. Randeep Guleria, Director All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Lt. Gen. Sunil Kant of Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). More will be handed over to different hospitals across the country for emergency use,” a Defence Ministry statement said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on May 15 announced the setting up of Oxygen Concentrator Banks across the city to aid patients in home isolation as well as for recovery after being discharged from the hospital.
He also said that both the COVID-19 cases as well as the positivity rate were declining steadily across the city, but reiterated that citizens should not let their guard down.
“Around 6,000 COVID cases have emerged in the last 24 hours and the positivity rate has gone down to 11%, which is a sign that things are constantly improving,” Mr. Kejriwal said in a video message.

Four districts to be under triple lockdown
Kerala will move into a highly restrictive lockdown phase on May 17. The government will review the regulations again on May 23. A senior official said any relaxation is unlikely till the surge in COVID-19 infections abated to an acceptable level.
Chief Secretary V. P. Joy is chairing a series of meetings and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is likely to make an announcement around 6 p.m.
