Halsema: Lift coronavirus restrictions for 18 to 25-year-olds
As the number of people vaccinated against COVID-19 grows and the number of infections and deaths continues to fall, many people are looking to the government for answers as to when they can look forward to living under fewer coronavirus restrictions. While people of all age groups are surely hoping for a coronavirus-free world, a number of people have highlighted the severe impact of the pandemic and consequent measures on the freedoms and mental health of younger generations.

With the next coronavirus press conference scheduled for February 23, rumours have started to emerge from The Hague as to what the Netherlands can expect acting Prime Minister Mark Rutte to announce about the coronavirus lockdown.
The Netherlands to ease some coronavirus restrictions
According to sources in The Hague, on Sunday at Rutte’s official residence cabinet ministers and members of the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) discussed whether or not any coronavirus restrictions could be eased and which restrictions would be extended. Rumours suggest that, now that the curfew is protected by a new emergency law, the Dutch government is looking to extend it by a further three weeks, and hopes that doing so will allow for other measures to be lifted.

The most recent advice published by the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) on January 17 advised the Dutch government to keep the current coronavirus measures in place - and potentially introduce new ones - and not to reopen primary schools before the end of January. Schools will therefore remain closed until February 8.
Latest advice from the OMT experts
The OMT's advice revealed serious concerns about the spread of the highly contagious “British” variant of COVID-19. According to the experts, the R-number of the new strain is 30 percent higher than the R-number of the “original” virus.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, the RIVM has conducted regular surveys in order to better understand the public’s response to the virus and any restrictions introduced by the government. The most recent survey was carried out between December 30 and January 3 among more than 51.000 participants.

The Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport (VWS) is trialling a new online resource named the Quarantine Travel Check (
Quarantaine Reischeck) which will support and advise all travellers coming into the Netherlands on what steps they can take to quarantine safely and effectively.
The Dutch government's Quarantine Travel Check
According to current guidelines outlined by the Dutch government, all travellers arriving in or returning to the Netherlands are expected to adhere to a strict 10-day quarantine rule. However, research conducted by the VWS revealed that while many are supportive of the measure, few actually follow it, with many struggling to keep track of the government’s travel regulations.
