He wrote "Blue Suede Shoes," which went to No. 2 on the Billboard pop chart and No. 1 on the country chart in 1956. Perkins nearly died in a car accident in March of '56, and never had a similar hit. Perkins died in Nashville on Jan. 19, 1998, following three strokes.
