Mayor Jacobs' budget includes officer raises, expectations of strong revenue growth, full funding for schools

Knox County Commission passes budget with officer raises, full funding for schools

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knox County Commission on Monday passed Mayor Glenn Jacobs' $893.6 million 2021/22 budget.
The numbers tell the tale: Knox County's budget for the new fiscal year looks nothing like last year's lean spending plan.
Earlier in May, Jacobs presented a 2021/22 proposed budget of that was $42.3 million above the current adopted budget.
Spanish Version:
It includes a fully funded $542 million schools budget, 5 percent raises for most Knox County Sheriff's Office uniformed personnel, a 33 percent boost in what it'll spend for road paving, and even money for a new environmental officer to try to curb county littering.

Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs lifts indoor mask mandate

With a path cleared by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, Knox County's indoor mask mandate was swiftly nixed by Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs.
The lifting of the mask mandate, however, isn't complete at the seat of government itself. The City-County Building is jointly occupied, and the city of Knoxville and the court system still want a mask requirement in place. The Public Building Authority, which owns and operates the building, is requiring masks in common spaces like elevators and hallways.
Dwight Van de Vate, county chief operating officer, sent an email to county employees explaining the rules early Wednesday morning. Masks will not be required inside county offices, although Van de Vate said "any employee who wishes to continue wearing a mask in the workplace is free to do so."
