CASEY: Limerick challenge book raises $1,100 to support children's literacy


Are you ready for the final chapter in the Great COVID-19 Limerick Challenge?
That began by accident early in winter when Gary Hunt took fingers to keyboard, doodled out some pandemic limericks and posted them to Facebook. He encouraged others to weigh in with their own.
When they did, he passed them onto yours truly. “Maybe you could get a column out of this,” Hunt suggested.
That ended with Hunt collecting scores of limericks from dozens of doggerel divas. The winner of the Great COVID-19 Limerick Challenge was Blacksburg artist Sally Mook. (Her “prize” is lunch with Hunt and me, and that’ll happen early in May, just as soon as my vaccination is fully effective.)

When the pandemic hit the US last spring, and states went into lockdown, policymakers and experts wondered about the trade-offs. Which would end up worse: damage to the economy from lingering restrictions, or the unchecked spread of a new and dangerous disease? “WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF,” tweeted President Donald Trump on March 22, after what must have been many hours spent in careful contemplation. But a narrower question, too, drew significant debate: What would happen to the rate of crime? Would the Covid Age, with all its rules for social distancing, produce a stretch of rampant lawlessness—or one of relative security and calm?

Despite our stoic, wartime-style belief that it would all be over by Christmas, 2020 had other plans and the restrictions seem to just keep on coming. Sure enough, here we are in a whole new year with that groundhog-day feeling that it’s still last March. But, there’s plenty to be hopeful for as the vaccines roll out and borders around the world hopefully reopen. We may not be able to physically travel anywhere right now, but we can plan. Here’s some wanderlust inspiration while we patiently wait for the departure lounge.
