Several hours now. it s always the ripple effect. we re seeing that on the departures board here. all of the orange that you see on that board, those are delays that we re seeing right now. they re not because of the system outage anymore. they re because crews aren t where they re supposed to be or the planes themselves aren t where they re supposed to be. and that is what is causing these delays in some cases of 30 minutes, some cases several hours. the passengers i ve been talking to today on top of being frustrated and stressed out by these delays and understandably so, they re also wondering if this flight system is so important and so critical, why isn t there a backup to the backup to the backup? what do you think of the fact that one software system going down can ground flights across the country? it s unbelievable. it s mind-blowing. stressful. like trying to be calm and ....
It s hard to believe that this is a fact just this year wildfires have scorched 5.6 million acres of land in the u.s. if that number doesn t shock you, maybe some of these images will. this is just outside of yosemite national park, burning for four days now and scorching 18,000 acres. it has been complicated for firefighters. a local captain told the l.a. times that terrain is slippery and burned trees are falling down as crews try to put out those flames. this started as a small grass fire, grew to burn down several buildings. it took down power lies, propane tanks near fort worth. crews aren t sure when it started but it has been hot and very dry there. not far away near dallas are fire quickly started taking over ....
Brush and millions of dead trees are a recipe for disaster. one of the most challenging aspects of this fire is the terrain. steep, rocky and heavily wooded, it is the perfect area for a fire to explode. drought conditions have turned much of the west into a tinder box. this year s fire season already twice as destructive as the ten-year average where there s no flames, thick choking smoke has billowed 200 miles away the crews aren t quite out of the woods yet. is that right no. we are only 22% contained and it could still go for weeks reporter: with yosemite s ancient history at stake, the 200 foot, 3,000-year-old sequoias have drawn presidents like taft and roosevelt to stand in their shadows for now, the mariposa grove is closed, forcing thousands to change their summer plans. tonight, even as the fire still burns in the park, these trees should stand tall for generations to come. the cause of this fire is still under investigation but ....
Across from highway 88. crews aren t too concerned about this one, they are just letting this one burn out. some good news, winds are calm right now. as we were driving down highway 88, we shaw b saw bulldozers cl out debris to prevent spread. today there are strong winds pushing the fire to grow on the north side, planes and helicopters making frequent drops into christmas valley. and crews will look for any opportunity to set more control lines and gain containment on this fire. in the meantime, areas like christmas valley, south lake tahoe still under alert and crews hope to gainful containment on the fire by september 13th. reporting near kirkwood, i m audrey mayer. and pedram javaheri is joining us again. what is the latest on those ....
