However, just because the runway is open doesn t mean the airport is necessarily going to be taking planes because you had a lot of cancellations due to the weather. then cancellations due to this incident on runway 13. so i suspect that for the most part, laguardia is going to be seeing very limited operations all day today. i suspect it s going to take a while to clear the debris, to clear that plane off of runway 13. so i think that was the most important thing we learned today. yeah, previous pilots just four minutes before this plane came in reported when they came in they had good braking action. and we also know that the route that the runway had been plowed within a few minutes of this incident. the other interesting factor i think was just one more indication of how well prepared new york is for an emergency. the airport fire and rescue teams had just done two drills in the last three weeks for this very kind of an incident. a plane going off the end of a runway or banking a ....

Authority press conference that there were other flights that came in on the runway 13. as we learned from tom costello this is a runway that goes both ways, 13 in one direction, 31 in the other direction. both run parallel to flushing bay, which is the water that the tip of this airplane came to be resting over the berm. we have images from the fdny and also from the new york police department that shows that vantage point as they came in on their boats. you can see right there just how dramatic and striking those images are. there were only 24 non-life threatening injuries reported. only three people have been taken to the hospital at this time. tom costello you re still with me. as we re trying to put the pieces together we ll learn more once the ntsb gets on site to figure out this investigation. as you were saying they hope to have this runway open by 7:00 p.m. tonight, which seems really fast when you think about the work involved. actually the airport. sorry, thomas if i missp ....

They hope to have the airport open at 6:59 p.m. tonight. but the port authority then subsequently said they hope to have runway 422 open. it should have been opened according to them, four minutes ago. we ll see how that plays out given all the environmental factors factors. it s snowing still up in new york. it may not be that easy to start bringing planes in in the middle of this investigation, when you ve also detoured other flights to other neighboring airports. i did want to make the point about what the ntsb is going to start looking at now. they ll arrive on the scene, and it s pretty easy to understand the basics here. the plane skidded off the runway. then you start back channelling, if you will and you say, okay what was the incoming speed? how fast were they coming in when they were approaching runway 13? you normally come in at about 130, 140 knots, somewhere in that neighborhood. if you have a snowy runway you don t come in soft. you hit that runway hard and you try to hit ....

The incident at 11:05, two planes landed and reported good braking action on the runways. the runway this particular runway had been plowed shortly before the incident. and pilots on other planes reported good braking action. yes? [ inaudible ] i think the pilot did everything he could to slow the aircraft down. obviously the pilot and co-pilots good efforts were reflected in the fact there were only minor injuries. [ inaudible ] i think what you re referring to is what s called emass, an faa required area at the end of each runway which slows aircrafts down if they overshoot. approximately 4500 to 5,000 feet down the runway the plane veered ....

This investigation. how likely is it that 422 is going to be active? i think that it will be active. simply because this aircraft was at the end of its landing run. and it was about 5,000 feet down the runway. that s almost one mile let me interrupt you quickly. we have passenger reaction from wnbc. what s going on? everybody had our seat belts on. it wasn t really that bad, but it was pretty scary. i m just thankful that we didn t go into the water. so just thankful that they didn t go into the water, hearing there the reaction from certain passengers that were on board. anthony, let me bring you back in. but confirmation from that passenger that everybody had their seat belts on. obviously very scary moments for those coming in on this flight. we landed. it started skidding and hit the side of the rail. then it went 400 yards. ....
