Once in a while, a leader comes along who is brilliant, creative and compassionate.
Larry Pimentel is such a person.
He has been a driving force in luxury travel for more than three decades, building four successful cruise brands and creating marketing programs that have become industry standards. An educator and mentor at heart, he is the go-to guy when a travel company wants to appeal to affluent travelers. This is why Pimentel is being recognized as the recipient of The Point Guy’s Lifetime Achievement Award, part of Cruise Week at the 2020 TPG Awards.

Cruise lines may have canceled most of their sailings for the past 10 months due to the coronavirus pandemic. But, so far, they haven’t canceled orders for new ships.
More than 20 new oceangoing vessels still are scheduled to debut in 2021, including at least a dozen from lines that market to North Americans.

There has been no shortage of gee-whiz attractions popping up on cruise ships in recent years.
For starters, there are the massive go-kart tracks that have begun appearing on Norwegian Cruise Line ships. Yes, go-karts tracks. Really.

But when it comes to the most innovative new attraction on a cruise ship, not just for this year but easily for the decade, it’s hard to argue that it is anything other than the roller coaster that Carnival is building atop its next new ship: the 5,200-passenger Mardi Gras.

It isn’t often that an entirely new cruise destination opens in The Bahamas. But that’s what happened almost exactly a year ago as MSC Cruises unveiled its very first private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.
Just 65 miles east of PortMiami, the 95-acre getaway is a sandy oasis that’s home to eight pristine beaches lined with lounge chairs, beach bars and beach-side food outlets.

We’re finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to a cruising comeback in North America.
The increasingly likelihood that large numbers of Americans will be vaccinated for the new coronavirus in coming months, coupled with what is expected to be a resulting decline in case counts for the illness, is raising the odds that at least a few cruise ships could resume operations out of U.S. ports by the spring, with more restarting service in the summer and the fall.

Royal Caribbean Group, the world’s second largest cruise company, is known as the great innovator of the cruise industry. It’s been the pioneer of everything from interior mall areas on cruise ships to such gee-whiz deck-top attractions as outdoor water theaters and surfing simulators.
So perhaps it should come as no surprise that the parent company of Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea and Azamara is behind what may be the biggest innovation in cruising in years: A new system to greatly shorten and simplify the safety drill process.
