Open streets project could return for Winnipeg cyclists this year; pedestrians will have to wait to use the routes

WINNIPEG --
A City of Winnipeg committee is proposing to expand a pilot project for cyclists this summer, however, pedestrians will have to wait a bit to use the program this year.
According to the standing policy committee on infrastructure renewal and public works, a total of 14 routes are being proposed for the Enhanced Summer Cycling Route pilot project, which would run from May 3 to November 5.
The paths are only for cyclists, as an amendment needs to be made to the Highway Traffic Act to allow pedestrians to walk on the roads.

COVID-19 vaccines: Surrey and White Rock first responders prioritized for a dose

VANCOUVER --
RCMP officers, civilian staff in detachments and firefighters began getting their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine Monday morning.
That’s according to an internal RCMP memo from Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards.
“I am pleased to advise you that we have received approval from the province and Fraser Health for all Surrey detachment staff (all categories of members and municipal employees) to receive vaccines on a priority basis,” wrote Edwards.
“These vaccinations are in recognition of the fact that Surrey is currently a hot spot for COVID transmission, and of your vital role as first responders and support staff,” read the memo.

New Westminster news: City council to consider allowing drinking in select parks

VANCOUVER --
Another Metro Vancouver city is considering a pilot project that would allow drinking in some of its parks.
New Westminster's city council is expected to discuss the idea in a meeting Monday. The motion, brought forward by Coun. Patrick Johnstone, proposes trying the program for the 2021 picnic season at six parks.
The suggested locations are:
Pier Park: On the grass picnic field and the grass knoll beside it
Moody Park: On the mixed-use grass fields north of the multi-use path (not on the paved areas or sports courts)
Hume Park: Upper Hume Park south of the off-leash dog and forested areas
