By Laura Logue Rood APRN, BC With great sadness, I read Cynthia McCormick s article about the Kelloyans’ inability to get help for their daughter Tatiana in the form of a Section 35 commitment. In simple terms, that is a commitment to a facility for substance use that endangers one s life. Why Judge Pino did not have a conversation with her parents ( the petitioners) or have the opinion of a court clinician is concerning. However, even had that happened, there would be no guarantee that she would have been committed. While Tatiana s problem was substance use, there are many other parents with a seriously mentally ill child who cannot get help unless they commit a crime. In more middle-class communities, it seems that is less likely, with police hoping that other means of assistance can be obtained lest they arrest someone ill for a minor offense. ....
