'Totally devastating': A year into pandemic, Berkshire stages silent — mostly


Amelia Chandler loves The Whiskey Treaty Roadshow, a local five-piece collaboration performing Americana, rock and roots-folk music.
“I love that they’re these hometown guys who have come together and collaborated with each other and told the story of their lives, but also the lives of people in this area who can connect to those stories,” she said.
Chandler, a Pittsfield resident, also loves live music in general.
“Music is a lifeline for me,” she said. “I am not a musician, by any means, but music is a lifeline. I love to sing along and dance and, just the experience — it’s life. It’s my breath. It’s oxygen.” ....

Bobbitt leaving New Rep to become Mass Cultural Council exec director


After a brief but significant tenure as artistic director of Watertown s New Repertory Theatre, Michael J. Bobbitt will depart this month to become executive director of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
Bobbitt – who joined the nonprofit theater in August 2019 and led it not only in expressing solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, but also in the development of its Strategic Anti-Racism, Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, Access, and Accountability Action Plan, all while simultaneously dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic – will take over leadership of the MCC on Feb. 1.
“I had planned to be at the New Rep for many years, so the timing of this move seemed a little off,” Bobbitt, 48, acknowledged in a recent telephone interview from his home in Cambridge. “But this position with the MCC was too good to turn away from. It’s a tremendous opportunity.” ....

$10 million in COVID relief granted to Mass. cultural nonprofits

BOSTON – Mass Cultural Council, in partnership with the Executive Office of Housing & Economic Development, announced the recipients of nearly $10 million in COVID relief through the Cultural Organization Economic Recovery Grant Program.
Three Fall River organizations were among the 183 cultural nonprofits statewide that received $9,960,600 to support this sector’s economic recovery from losses sustained by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program is part of the Baker-Polito Administration’s Economic Recovery Plan, Partnerships for Recovery.
In addition to expanding opportunity for job seekers, assisting communities as they plan and adapt, and helping to create a foundation to build upon in the months ahead, our comprehensive plan for economic recovery continues to deliver targeted relief in the form of grants like this, said Gov. Mass Cultural Council Names Michael J. Bobbitt Next Executive Director

The governing board of the Mass Cultural Council announces today that Michael J. Bobbitt will serve as the Agency’s next Executive Director.
Bobbitt, currently the Artistic Director of the New Repertory Theatre in Watertown, MA, will officially join the Agency on February 1, 2021, thereby becoming the most senior cultural official in the Commonwealth.
“The Council’s search for our next Executive Director truly left no stone unturned,” said Nina Fialkow, Chair, Mass Cultural Council. “We are delighted Michael will join us in February and are eager to begin this new period together. I am confident the Agency will continue to lead and serve the Massachusetts cultural sector impactfully under his direction.” ....
