House last year stays bottled up in congress. meanwhile, his agency has approved 11 deep water drills and permits since february. 17 more are pending and new poll polling shows that 69% of americans want drilling. what nobody wants is another tragedy like the one that took 11 lives last year. that s what brings us here tonight. so there s clearly a lot left undone a year after the disaster. there s much that may not get done any time soon. before we bring our guests in, who are passionate about the region and unique way of life and also what steps need to be taken to move forward, let s begin by taking you back to day one. it began with a powerful explosion less than 24 hours ago. helicopters and ships are searching the waters off of venice, louisiana, for 11 people who are missing after the blast. federal authorities tell cnn so far there has been no report of any oil spill. at first it seemed like a story about trying to find those people, rescuing those people and dealing with the explosion. the burning oil rig sank into the sea.

Since the deep water horizon tragedy. tomorrow will mark one year sthans rig blew up, a year since 11 men died. a year since the world watched 200 million gallons of oil pour into the ocean and people saw their lives change overnight. they lost customers, money, their businesses suffered. they suffered, too. the way of life was threatened. a lot of people made promises to fix things, to clean up the beaches and the bayous, to make lives whole and to make sure nothing like this happens again. so tonight we re taking a look at how well bp, regulators, legislators and others have lived up to their promises. a year ago, with oil in the marshes and the beaches, bp s ceo tony hayward said we will make this right and so did his lieutenant, doug suttles. we won t quit until we get this job done, i can promise you that. so did the federal government.
