After the Senate passed their budget last Friday, House members took their turn this week to review the proposal sent from their colleagues across the hall. Most of the House Appropriations subcommittees met to hear from the General Assembly’s hard-working fiscal and bill-drafting staff about the specific provisions of the Senate budget. Most of the conversations in the subcommittee meetings were simply informational. Aside from the budget discussions, several bills that have been moving the entire session received final votes. Next week, the legislature is taking a recess for the Independence Day holiday, and will reconvene the following week.

This has been a busy week all around the legislative complex, both in the General Assembly and in the state agencies. On Tuesday, the Senate officially confirmed Lieutenant General Walter E. Gaskin to be the next Secretary of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. On Wednesday, Machelle Sanders went through her first Senate committee confirmation hearing to potentially become Secretary of the Commerce Department. Also on Wednesday, Governor Cooper (D) appointed Pamela Cashwell to lead the Department of Administration as Secretary. Members of the General Assembly will also be back home next week as they take a spring break recess. We hope you have an enjoyable, relaxing and safe Easter weekend!

Proposed bill calls for a Convention of States to amend the constitution

FirstInFreedom.com reports:
As required until reaching the necessary support of three-fourths of state legislatures, North Carolina lawmakers have again filed resolution calling for a Article V Convention of the States in order to amend the U.S. Constitution to remedy federal usurpation of state legislative authority, to reverse unsustainable federal debt expansion on the backs of taxpayers, and to honor the “solemn duty of the states to protect freedom and opportunity for our citizens, including the generations to come.”
House Joint Resolution 233 has primary sponsorship from the House Majority Leader Rep. John Bell (R-Wayne); Chairman of the House Regulatory Reform Committee; Appropriations Vice Chair Rep. Dennis Riddell (R-Alamance); House Education Majority Whip Rep. Jon Hardister (R-Guilford); and, House Deputy Conference Chair Rep. Jason Saine (R-Lincoln).
