Narrator: that question landed right in the laps of local police because mary s death didn t look like suicide or an accident. phelps: what does that leave you? that leaves you with homicide. that leaves you with somebody deliberately put colchicine in something that mary ate or drank that day to kill her. narrator: but who and why? in november of 2015, the sheriff s office opened a criminal investigation. groah: a detective came to my door, and he told me that he was investigating a murder. and i m like, whose murder? and he said, mary yoder. and i said, she wasn t murdered. she just di he said, no. we believe she was murdered. narrator: by this time, four months had passed since mary s death, and detectives soon learn that a lot of unexpected things had happened with the yoder family in those four months.
i observed kitchen cabinets open, and some kitchen drawers on the floor. in my experience as a police officer and investigator, when a burglary occurs, the kitchen is not a common place that a burglar would look for items. a burglary, also, items are scattered about. drawers drum dumped on the floor. i felt it was not ordinary and i expressed that to my partner. while he found that out for a burglary, it was nathan s behavior that struck him more. describe his demeanor. as i am speaking to him, he never showed emotion or asked questions as to what was going on. prosecutors said nathan showed no emotion during his police interview. even when a detective told him denise was dead. you can t tell me things about her.
Investigators hoped he might confess and sent veteran detective a. p. merillat to interview him. merillat thought a trip to the crime scenes might provoke something in daniel corwin. merillat: i brought him to the car wash. i pulled into the bay that he described as being the one he drove into. and it was really odd to me that he appeared to go into, like, a trancelike state, or at first, i thought he was faking, but he continued to do this every time we met. so i think it was real. but he started reliving the events of that night when mary risinger was killed. narrator: even corwin admitted he got into a trancelike state during these attacks, and this might explain one other commonality with all his crimes. all of them were spontaneous, spur-of-the-moment attacks in public places with plenty of potential witnesses. they re obviouy high-risk cres from the standpoint
Narrator: sherry s story wasn t much different than tim s. she said that timmy was a very dear friend of hers, that they spent time together, but they strictly had a friendship, and that was it. narrator: now detectives confronted sherry with the evidence from her cellphone. this interview ended, but it apparently had quite an effect on sherry engel. later that day, she came back to the police station and told detectives it was time to come clean. detective: okay. okay. a rattled sherry now confessed to the affair with tim rogers.
