Two northern Arizona tribes have condemned the start of operations at a uranium mine just south of the Grand Canyon.

Mining operations at the controversial Pinyon Plain uranium mine south of Grand Canyon National Park have begun, according to the company that owns the mine.

President Joe Biden proclaimed nearly 1 million acres around the Grand Canyon as the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument on Tuesday morning.
