A.H. Vishwanath wants to contest Legislative Council polls

Former Minister and BJP MLC A.H. Vishwanath, who has been barred by the Supreme Court from being made a Minister unless he becomes an elected member, on Monday met Home Minister Amit Shah’s confidant and BJP national general secretary Bhupendra Yadav in Delhi to discuss how he could get a ministerial berth.
Soon after the meeting, Mr. Vishwanath told reporters that he had offered to quit the current nominated MLC post so that he could become the party’s candidate to contest for the MLC seat to be elected from the Legislative Assembly. The seat has fallen vacant after the death of S.L. Dharme Gowda of the JD(S).

Senior JD(S) MLC Basavaraj Horatti was on Tuesday elected as the Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council, amid protests by Congress over the passage of "anti cow slaughter bill" in the House. Horatti, a seven time MLC, who represents Karnataka west teachers constituency, was declared "unanimously" elected, as the opposition Congress that was protesting from the well of the house, did not propose the name of its candidate Naseer Ahmed, during the election process.

Bengaluru, Feb 9 : Seven-time Janata Dal (S) MLC, Basavaraj Horatti, who had entered the fray as the ruling BJP supported candidate for the post of the Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council, was declared ‘elected unanimously’ on Tuesday.
Horatti was declared ‘unanimously’ elected as the opposition Congress did not propose the name of its candidate Naseer Ahmed during the election process.
Horatti (74), who started as a physical education teacher in the Lamington High School in Hubballi, did is Bachelor of Arts degree and before doing Masters in physical education. He has been a member of the Council for more than 40 years now, starting from 1980. He had served as the Chairman (acting) of the Council from June 22 to December 12, 2018.

‘Untoward incidents in the House hold a mirror to the system’
K. Prathapchandra Shetty quit as Chairman of the Legislative Council on Thursday, after reading out a nine-page resignation letter in which he said the recent “untoward incidents” in the House “hold a mirror to the system”, and seeking an apology from the people of Karnataka.
A motion to remove Mr. Shetty had been tabled in the Council and it was set to be taken up for discussion. However, he chose to quit and submitted his resignation to Deputy Chairman M.K. Pranesh. Now, senior JD (S) member Basavaraj Horatti is all set to be elected as the new Chairman.

Bengaluru: On a day when Janata Dal (Secular) supremo HD Deve Gowda said he would not attend President Kovind's address to Parliament, his party in Karnataka cemented its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning the Deputy Chairman's post in the Karnataka Legislative Council on Friday.
M. K. Pranesh, the BJP's candidate was elected the Deputy Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council. The election was necessitated following the demise of S. L. Dharme Gowda of the JD(S) on December 29, 2020.

Blaming Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan and Minor Irrigation Minister J.C. Madhuswamy for the pandemonium in the Legislative Council on December 15, 2020, a three-member House Committee, headed by Marithibbe Gowda, in its interim report has recommended the barring of several members, belonging to various parties, from participating in House proceedings for a period ranging from one to two sessions.
Condemning the behaviour of two senior Ministers on that day, the committee, whose report was tabled in the House on Friday, has pinned the blame on them for inciting the chaos. It also stated that it was not proper for them to hold any government post. The committee has also recommended barring another Minister, Kota Srinivas Poojary, for two legislative sessions and felt that he, too, should not discharge any responsible position in the government. It has identified Mr. Poojary for inciting Arun Shahapur.
