How DiaCritics Creates a Platform for Diverse Vietnamese Voices From Abroad

Saigoneer

“Vietnamese communities can sometimes/often demand conformity and tradition of people in order to feel a part of things; I have always seen diaCRITICS as an opportunity to trouble the definitions, push the boundaries, to include the atypical voices and stories and viewpoints.”
This statement, offered by Dao Strom, outgoing editor-in-chief of the online publication
diaCRITICS, serves as a fine introduction to the online publication that has been an important platform for diverse diasporic voices in fiction, poetry, non-fiction, photography, visual art and filmmaking.
Saigoneer has long championed the US-based publication, sharing its articles on our social media platforms to great popularity. We had the opportunity to meet Dao in person during her visit to Saigon last year, which resulted in a more concrete partnership in which we re-publish some

INTRODUCTION
The most important work any poet does is done on the page. Despite all claims otherwise, poets are mechanics, not magicians, and what makes us what we are is the tinkering, the testing, the troubleshooting. I love that work. Especially now, I take such comfort in the sanctity of the page. There I’m alone, adrift in possibility, nothing but an echo with ink, and there I must prove again and anew what I am and what I can do. A poet is not a poet without poems. The work is all and everything that matters.

10 Questions for Emily Van Kley

Tell us about one of the first pieces you wrote.
The first story I ever wrote was a near-total plagiarism of “Popcorn” by Frank Asch. If I remember correctly, my only ‘original’ contributions were the title—“Pippi Poppi Popcorn”—and the fact that the protagonist was a little girl instead of a bear in a racist Halloween costume (yikes).
What writer(s) or works have influenced the way you write now?
There are way too many to name here, of course. Like a lot of writers, I feel like I learn something from/am influenced by nearly every piece of art I interact with. While I was working on my most recent book,
