For more than two weeks, Colombia has seen a nonstop wave of protests, initially in response to a proposed tax overhaul to address budget shortfalls. Colombian police have responded with violence to the largely peaceful demonstrations, leaving more than 40 dead, hundreds injured, and a reported 548 disappeared, and more than a dozen cases of sexual violence.

“We had a productive meeting with the coalition of hope, a great opportunity for dialogue, overcoming differences and without political point-scoring,” Duque said on Twitter, referring to the group of politicians.
But opposition attendees said Duque needed to do a lot of work to address demands for action on poverty, unemployment and ending police violence.

Colombia's Duque seeks to calm protest as grievances fester | Politics News

Colombian President Ivan Duque has met with political opponents and expressed more optimism than his critics about progress made towards calming more than a week of widespread and sometimes deadly street protests.
“We had a productive meeting with the coalition of hope, a great opportunity for dialogue, overcoming differences and without political point-scoring,” Duque wrote on social media on Friday, referring to the group of politicians.
But opposition attendees said Duque needed to do a lot of work to address demands for action on poverty, unemployment and ending police violence.
The group “entered talks with President Ivan Duque as opposition and we left as opposition”, said Jorge Robledo, a senator for Colombia’s Dignity party.

Biden increases pressure on Duque with explicit support for Colombia's peace process

March 1, 2021
US President Joe Biden is increasing pressure on Colombia’s President Ivan Duque to stop trying to obstruct justice and his country’s peace process.
Biden wrote his Colombian counterpart that he “eager to reinvigorate” relations, but was “committed to a bipartisan agenda” that “contributes towards a durable peace” in Colombia.
The February 17 letter was the first time the US President personally reached out to his Colombian counterpart since Biden’s election in November last year.
Relations between the two countries strained after US authorities found out that Duque’s far-right party and Colombia’s ambassador to Washington DC were trying to meddle in the US elections.

The dilemma of Colombia's 'Coalition of Hope'

March 1, 2021
Colombia’s leading liberal and progressive politicians want to send traditional parties to the opposition benches next year, but are reluctant to join forces with the runner-up in the 2018 elections.
Whether they will succeed may depend on whether the so-called “Coalition of Hope” can join forces with the outspoken runner-up in the 2018 elections, Senator Gustavo Petro.
The Coalition vs. Petro
The Coalition of Hope was formed by dissident Liberal Party politicians, members of the Green Alliance party, the leftist Democratic Pole and former Mayor Sergio Fajardo.
The politicians have agreed to formulate a joint political agenda and elect one candidate to take on whoever the country’s notoriously corrupt establishment will push forward before March 6.
