Editorial: MBTA zone change a sign of sluggish housing growth

Whether by coincidence or design, the state last week gave more flexibility to cities and towns required to have at least one zone that permits denser, multifamily housing, even as a recently released report indicated that Massachusetts lags behind 40 other states when it comes to increasing its housing stock.

Worcesteria: Police union hints at action beyond 'Blue Flu'

Worcester Magazine
UNION BLUES: Not only do we have to keep on guard for COVID-19 and the common flu this winter, it appears Worcester has also been possibly plagued by a case of “Blue Flu.” Writing for the Telegram & Gazette, Steven H. Foskett reports that, "The city is investigating an allegation that a group of city police officers recently coordinated a 'sick out' action following the discipline of a fellow officer. In a statement released Wednesday, City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. said the city is aware of the allegation, and is taking it seriously. He said the Police Department and the city Human Resources Department are conducting an investigation.” The action, according to Foskett and pretty much anyone on local social media, was “to protest discipline … the department meted out against an officer who was recorded on video appearing to slap a man on a gurney in July on Main Street.” Now, investigations are underway, so we'll hopefully find out what really happened here 10 years from now when the Telegram & Gazette sues the police again for its traditional once-a-decade public records request lawsuit, but it seems the Worcester Police Officials Union is leaving the door open for more, in response to City Manager Ed Augustus' proposed police reforms, which include no longer having police stationed at schools. “Looks like some good old fashion 'bare knuckled' union action will be forthcoming,” writes union president Sgt. Richard Cipro, on a Facebook post. “Too bad the last 30 years of good relations with the city is ruined by someone who 'stole' the job from a person of color!!!!” I legit have no idea what Cipro is talking about there. The only other serious candidate I recall at the time was current Assistant City Manager for Operations Kathleen G. Johnson, but maybe I'm forgetting something, or maybe Cipro's just saying things to be provocative. Anyway, as many have pointed out online, Cipro's made many labor-action noises, including his response to the news that Pickett Plaza near Polar Park has been cleared by the Planning Board. Writes Cipro, “Hmmm!! Is that Pickett or Picket? From our perspective we will be renaming it 'union' picket plaza soon!!” The list of police union grievances seems to be growing as contract negotiations loom, and would probably be met with more sympathy if they showed the slightest bit of support for other labor movements in the city, such as the Table Talk Pies or St. Vincent's Nurses strikes. Still, Augustus' proposed reforms have been greeted with cautious optimism from activists, although there's much doubt as to whether they can survive the City Council, with journalistic rapscallion and pretty good guitarist Bill Shaner observing, “I don’t see a Kate Toomey or a Donna Colorio or a Moe Bergman or a Candy Mero-Carlson going quietly along with this.” True, although the latter of those has a challenger in her race, and she should think long and hard as to how her constituents would feel about a vote against police reform. The answer may surprise her.
