ECPD arrests El Campo caregiver after autopsy

Injuries uncovered by an autopsy report transformed a toddler’s death from sad accident to capital murder in El Campo Friday.
El Campo police say 26-year-old babysitter Angel Nicole Castro of 703 Way inflicted egregious harm upon 19-month-old Roselynn Coates on Jan. 19 and then waited 45 minutes to call for help.
“She said she didn’t think it was that bad at the time,” El Campo police Lt. Russell Urban said.
When El Campo EMS was summoned to the scene at 11:06 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, little Roselynn was not conscious, but was breathing, according to the ECPD.
“She had an obvious head injury, but that was not the cause of death,” Urban said, adding the child suffered unspecified fatal internal injuries.

John N. McCain

John N. McCain passed into the arms of the Lord on Dec. 20, 2020 at El Campo Memorial Hospital. He was 102 years young. He was born in Cuero on Feb. 15, 1918 to Wharton residents, the late Sallie Pearl and Joseph McCain.
John was a resident of Wharton growing up and a graduate of Wharton High School in 1935. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Master Sergeant in Patton’s 3rd Army. Upon returning from the war, he married the love of his life, Virginia (nee Cochran) in Rosenberg and they raised their children in West Columbia for 20 years. They then moved to Liberty where they lived for 35 years. John worked as a foreman in the gas pipeline industry for 36 years until he retired in 1986. John returned to live in Wharton in a house he built on the same block where the house he grew up in still stands.  He loved to travel and see new places. His children fondly remember how much he loved to serve others. He always looked out for his neighbors and if any of his neighbors were elderly or not able do it themselves, John would go around to their houses and place the garbage bins out in the morning and return them in the evening when he returned from work. John and his wife could always be counted on to take friends and neighbors, who could no longer drive, into Houston so they would make their doctor’s appointments.
