Power companies are more focused than ever on cybersecurity, and experts say results of Utility Dive s 8th annual State of the Electric Utility (SEU) survey show an industry working to better secure the grid. But they also say the responses reveal cause for concern  including the potential for misplaced utility efforts and under-investment in emerging technologies
Overall, the U.S. electric power industry is doing a good job of addressing known cybersecurity threats, said independent utility security consultant Tom Alrich. But he also questioned the focus many utilities have on securing information networks amid a growing threat to operational technology and industrial control networks. ....

Utilities have a long list of priorities for the federal government, according to Utility Dive s 2021 State of the Electric Utility (SEU) Survey Report, released this week. Tax credits, enhanced cybersecurity requirements, baseload generation support, a carbon price and strong federal decarbonization targets were among the top issues respondents from public power entities, electric cooperatives, and investor-owned utilities want the federal government to address.
The SEU survey was taken by respondents before the results of the 2020 presidential election were known, and the federal landscape has shifted dramatically since then. The White House is now aiming for a 100% carbon-free power grid by 2035, 15 years earlier than the 2050 target many utilities have set.  ....

Got a Reliable Electrical Grid?

Might we learn from the Texas electrical grid debacle?
If we Californians are smug our temerity, (we) may be punished. The interpretations of what happened to the Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) electrical grid are baffling. Texas Governor Abbot asserted the causality was the renewable energy facet of that grid. A frozen 4,500 megawatts (MW) of wind turbines were the problem when 30,000 MW of fossil fuel electrical generation plants went offline?
Then, there is the gloating by some who state that the dilemma is not enough renewable energy. ‘Reliably unreliable’ renewable wind power produced 42% of ERCOT s electricity on Feb. 8, and on Feb. 11, 8%. Not enough Texans can afford $7,500 for 5,000 watts of Tesla s Powerwall backup to residential solar. ....
