Women in England almost twice as likely as men to be prescribed opiate painkillers

Last modified on Fri 16 Apr 2021 08.15 EDT
Women in England are almost twice as likely as men to be prescribed powerful and potentially addictive opiate painkillers, prompting experts to warn that female pain is overly medicated and not properly investigated.
The number of people prescribed drugs such as codeine and tramadol – often used for chronic pain – rose to 1.18 million in the first 10 months of 2020. Of these, 745,047 were women and 434,697 were men, a Guardian analysis found.
The growth in such prescriptions issued to women rose by 4.5% between October 2015 and October 2020, compared with an increase of less than 1% for men. Annual averages showed the same trend, according to data from the NHS Business Services Authority, which deals with prescription services in England.

Truck Festival reveals star-studded line-up with Bombay Bicycle Club, The Kooks, IDLES and more

THE organisers of Oxfordshire’s biggest dedicated rock festival have vowed to carry on with this year’s event and have unveiled the headline acts.
Truck Festival is set to go ahead at Hill Farm, Steventon, near Didcot, from July 22-25, headlined by Bombay Bicycle Club, The Kooks and Royal Blood. And tickets have already sold out.
The festival ended months of speculation last night by revealing its first tranche of almost 70 bands and artists, and insisting the event would go ahead. This comes as other large events, including Glastonbury Festival and, locally, Cornbury and Riverside festivals and Cowley Road Carnival took the decision to call off their shows.

How Reading Festival could go ahead as council hopes for return

The success of pilot testing in April could determine whether Reading Festival goes ahead this summer, the council has said.
After a councillor downplayed claims the festival would return this summer on Friday (February 26), Reading Borough Council (RBC) has struck a more optimistic note in a new statement on the event, saying it would “love it to return”.
This follows the announcement from Festival Republic last Wednesday (February 24) that it expects the event to go ahead this August, with the event selling out just days later.
A council spokesman said: “Reading Festival is a major highlight of the cultural calendar in Reading and, like everyone, the council would love to see it return this summer.

Festival Republic, organisers of Reading and Leeds Festival made an announcement on Wednesday, February 24, tweeting: “Reading and Leeds 2021. Following the government’s recent announcement, we can’t wait to get back to the fields this summer LET’S GO #RandL21”.
And Festival Republic director Melvin Benn told The Guardian “We’re enthusiastic, we’re excited, and we’re certain that it’s going to go ahead”.

Singer George Sheppard has defended his family band Sheppard after they were slandered with "nasty" and "unfair" comments online since their father's arrest in Papua New Guinea.
The Brisbane pop group - which includes siblings George, Amy and Emma Sheppard - were preparing to release their third album, out today, when their father, former Crown prosecutor Greg Sheppard, was arrested on January 20 on conspiracy and false pretence charges relating to an alleged fraudulent transfer of funds.
While Mr Sheppard's law firm Young and Williams, the only major law firm in PNG that does not work for the government, denounced it as a "politically motivated'' case that would be "defended vigorously'', online trolls have since targeted his children and questioned the band's funding.
