SC affirms life sentences on 2 cops, 4 other kidnappers

Supreme Court (File photo) MANILA - The Supreme Court (SC) affirmed the sentence of reclusion perpetua (life imprisonment) on six men, including two policemen, convicted of kidnapping in 2005. Police Officers 1 Antonio Castillo and Jose Lonmar Zapatos, at the time assigned to the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group and Special Action Force, respectively, were convicted along with Crispin Araneta, Annabelle Olidan, Benjamin Olidan, and Lynfer Bicodo for kidnapping then 11-year-old twins, Jin Ritz and Kelvyelt Sermonia, their 9-year-old sister, Vinz, and their nanny, Eulalia Cuevas. The victims, on their way to school, were taken at Filinvest, Quezon City on the morning of Aug. 30, 2005. In a 12-page resolution uploaded May 20, the SC affirmed the Court of Appeals' June 7, 2019 decision which upheld the sentence and increased to PHP100,000 the cost of damages imposed by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 225. 13 LGUs in Bicol now ASF-free

(PNA file photo) LEGAZPI CITY - The Department of Agriculture in Bicol (DA-5) reported on Thursday that more local government units (LGUs) in the region with previously confirmed cases of African swine fever (ASF) are now free of the pestilence and have been removed from the quarantine list. In an interview, Emily Bordado, DA-5 spokesperson, said 10 municipalities and three cities in four provinces of the region are now ASF-free and have been upgraded from "red" to "pink" zone. "Red" zones are infected areas while "pink" zones serve as a buffer, where ASF is not present but adjacent to an infected zone. "Areas included were Bulan and Santa Magdalena in Sorsogon; Canaman and Iriga City in Camarines Sur; Daraga, Malilipot, Malinao, Pio Duran, Polangui, Bacacay, Ligao City and Tabaco City in Albay; and Sta. Wage boards approve salary hike in Ilocos, Cagayan, Caraga

MANILA-The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards (RTWPBs) in Regions 1 (Ilocos), 2 (Cagayan Valley), and 13 (Caraga) have approved the increase ranging from PHP50 to PHP90 on the daily minimum wage of private sector workers. In a statement, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said RTWPB 1 unanimously issued Wage Order No. RB1-21 on May 16, providing wage increases ranging from PHP60 to PHP90 to be given in two to three tranches. With the wage adjustment, minimum wage rate in the region will range from PHP372 to PHP400 from P282 to P340 under the previous Wage Order. Also, the Board issued Wage Order No. RB1-DW-03 granting PHP500 and PHP1,500 monthly wage increases for domestic workers in cities and first-class municipalities and for other municipalities, respectively, bringing the new monthly wage rate to PHP5,000. Meanwhile, RTWPB II has issued Wage Order No. RTWPB-02-21 on May 17, granting wage increases ranging from PHP50 to PHP75 in two to three tranches. The ....
