After rolling through the first half of summer, dipping our toes in the social waters and, for some, even venturing out of town, it feels like the right time to get back in step with local community offerings. Relish the re-emergence of live arts and performances, offered both indoors and outside; especially those tailor-made to entertain the little ones in the family.

Mother’s Day arrives Sunday, May 9, and there is no shortage of ways to spend quality time with family in honor of the occasion.
Local venues in San Francisco and beyond are preparing parklets and newly constructed performance areas to celebrate the season, as vaccination rates spark a slight relaxation of public health guidelines. Examples include District Six, a SOMA StrEat Food Park-curated outdoor food truck and entertainment area in the city, and Out Front at the UC Theatre in Berkeley, which features a street bar, casual outdoor dining and live music from 6:30-10 p.m., Thursdays-Saturdays. The Blue Note Napa is also set for a pivot to outdoor entertainment, with a robust live music series hosted at the Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena starting up later this month; and there’s also the return of San Rafael’s weekly Dine Under the Lights, which offers live music and al fresco dining on Thursday-Friday evenings.

Earth Day 2021: How to celebrate virtually, or in person, with Bay Area organizations

Anne Schrager April 16, 2021
Earth Day, the worldwide day of environmental activism held annually since 1970, returns on Thursday, April 22. April 17-25 is also National Park Week, which features special programs, events and digital experiences focused on the natural world. Celebrate this year’s official Earth Day theme, “Together, We Can Restore Our Earth,” and activate change for good with many in-person options in the Bay Area, as well as virtual offerings for all.
San Francisco has planned a second year of celebrating the holiday virtually with a robust lineup of dynamic speakers, live music, “artivism” and a sustainable chef’s zone. The city of Oakland has made an online hub to find local community actions for residents to participate in on their website. The East Bay Regional Parks and the city of Napa are offering online programming as well, featuring webinars and local cleanup volunteer opportunities. Some cities, including Colma and Santa Rosa, plan to present drive-up events where patrons can pick up goodies and information on other ways to get involved.

The month of March is typically dedicated to honoring mighty women and shining a light on the impactful ways they have brought change and contributed to the improvement of equal rights through the ages.
Women’s History Month is celebrated across the U.S. and around the world and corresponds with International Women’s Day (March 8). Bay Area organizations plan to recognize the celebration with a variety of virtual performances, activities and lectures aimed at highlighting women’s and girls’ power all month long.
