As Hurricane Ian pummeled Florida, Facebook allowed anti-science content to thrive - Vimarsana News

As Hurricane Ian pummeled Florida, Facebook allowed anti-science content to thrive

During Hurricane Ian, which hit Florida and South Carolina last week, popular right-leaning Facebook pages directed users to content that downplayed or completely refuted the connection between the climate crisis and the changing nature of extreme storms. Media Matters found that between September 24 and October 2, 2022, right-leaning Facebook pages published a higher volume of posts on the topic, and their posts received more interactions than posts from ideologically nonaligned or left-leaning pages.    As recovery efforts continue, nearly 100 deaths have been confirmed in Florida as of...

Fox's Facebook pages amplify and praise cruel immigration stunts by right-wing governors

Right-leaning Facebook pages — including pages from Fox News and Fox Business — are amplifying and praising the cruel political ploys of Govs. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Greg Abbott (R-TX), who reportedly misled and relocated migrants and asylum-seekers to Democratic-led cities without informing local authorities.  Media Matters compiled and analyzed over 7,200 Facebook posts about DeSantis’ and Abbott’s  immigration stunts from news and politics pages from September 14 through September 19 and found that 14 pages affiliated with Fox News and Fox Business dominated discussions of the s...

On Facebook, right-leaning pages are dominating the conversation around the Supreme Court ruling against the EPA

On June 30, the Supreme Court’s conservative majority issued an unsurprisingly devastating ruling on West Virginia v. EPA that severely limits the Environmental Protection Agency’s power to make power plants cut the toxic pollution that is driving the climate crisis. Climate advocates and scientists have been watching this case anxiously since 2021, knowing that failing to cut fossil fuel emissions would lead to increasingly destructive climate events such as wildfires, and would hit the most vulnerable communities the hardest.    Despite the clear consequences of hamstringing the EPA...

Facebook allowed dangerous anti-LGBTQ rhetoric to spread across the platform during Pride Month

During Pride Month, Facebook enabled right-wing media to amplify bigoted and dangerous lies about the LGBTQ community and Pride events — at a time when LGBTQ rights have come under assault and violent attacks on LGBTQ people are on the rise. Media Matters found that in June, right-leaning pages and users in right-wing groups circulated thousands of posts fearmongering about topics related to Pride Month, with right-leaning pages posting about the topic nearly 3,500 times and earning just under 4 million interactions.   Facebook and its parent company Meta had eagerly promoted Pride Month, a...

On Facebook, right-leaning pages celebrating the end of Roe v. Wade overshadowed posts about the decision's consequence - Vimarsana News

On Facebook, right-leaning pages celebrating the end of Roe v. Wade overshadowed posts about the decision's consequence

After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade along ideological lines, right-leaning Facebook pages immediately started celebrating the decision. In a new study, Media Matters found that these pages earned nearly 7.7 million interactions on roughly 2,400 posts on June 24, the day the decision was announced, earning more interactions than left-leaning and ideologically nonaligned pages combined.  We found similar celebrations among users in right-wing groups, who also called for more restrictive laws, claimed there would be riots from the left in response to the decision, and mocked libe...
