WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Alex Avila has caught 187 different pitchers in 902 regular season games since his 2009 major league debut. That's naturally turned his brain into a dusty filing cabinet of the most minute details. At one point, about 10 years ago, it was consumed by Justin Verlander's curve or Aníbal Sánchez's change-up. In recent seasons, he calculated the best ways for Zack Greinke or Archie Bradley to use their fastballs.
And along the way, in stints with the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks, he stored tons of information on Max Scherzer and Patrick Corbin that could now serve him and the Washington Nationals well. Avila is the team's new backup catcher after signing a one-year, $1.5 million contract in late January. He is expected to start a maximum of two times per week to spell Yan Gomes. But his experience with Scherzer and Corbin could make him more valuable come September than his stats and workload might suggest.

Under the Radar Mets Bullpen Candidates For 2021

Bullpen arms are often considered to be the most volatile position in baseball. Most relievers never experience long-term dominance, and aside from the great ones, most see their success come in bursts. Relievers seldom see love on top prospect lists, top 100 lists, or anything of that nature. Even more to their unpredictability, most of […]

WASHINGTON - Naturally, the addition of Kyle Schwarber sparked a round of concerns about the slugging outfielder's defense. But perhaps more questions should key on what Victor Robles did in center field last season, and what he has to do moving forward.
Unless there's a designated hitter in the National League this year, Schwarber will play left for the Washington Nationals. They signed him to a one-year, $10 million deal Saturday - with a $7 million base salary and $3 million buyout if a mutual option is not picked up. They did so to beef up a lineup that already included Juan Soto, Trea Turner and Josh Bell. And almost immediately, the dealwas publicly defined by Schwarber's defense.
