Political and religious figures, as well as research centers, have called for sanctions to be lifted, while the Syrian opposition members and activists continue to support existing sanctions. On 21 January, political figures and Christian clergy sent letters to Washington and European governments, appealing to lift the sanctions imposed on the Syrian regime. They said these sanctions put inordinate pressure on the Syrian people, depriving them of humanitarian assistance– that does not fall within the sanctions list imposed on the Syrian regime. ....

The STD defines itself as a non-profit and non-governmental organization, but it is directly linked to Asma al-Assad, the wife of the head of the Syrian regime, Bashar al-Assad. Syrian people call the STD “the Syrian First Lady’s organization” because Asma al-Assad holds the position of the chairperson of the board of directors. The growing activities of the STD coincided with the larger political role Asma al-Assad is playing.
