Wheel of fortune: Bangladeshi's low-cost ambulance wins awards

DHAKA: When Faysal Islam lost a loved one in a road accident in 2016 due to lack of ambulance support, he launched the Safewheel project with two friends to provide low-cost medical services to isolated rural areas of Bangladesh.
On Wednesday, the 24-year-old was named 2021 Commonwealth Young Person of the Year — in addition to winning the regional award for Asia and prize money of $7,000 — for his “innovative approach to community help.”
“One of our co-founders’ uncles died in 2016 because no ambulance was available. This incident prompted me to do something to facilitate medical care for people,” Islam, co-founder and chief business development officer of Safewheel, told Arab News on Saturday.

Co-founder and chief business development manager of "Safewheel", Faysal Islam, has been named the Commonwealth Young Person of the Year 2021. He also received the regional award of the Commonwealth Youth Awards 2021 for Asia.
The Commonwealth Youth Awards recognise young people across different regions of the world who help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through significant projects to transform the lives of people in their community. Twenty individuals from 18 countries were announced as finalists in late January, from a pool of more than 1000 entries.
Faysal's initiative "Safewheel" focuses on "SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-Being". The organisation provides affordable emergency medical services through mini three-wheeled ambulances and trained on-board medical staff to rural areas. The company's current fleet of 10 mini three-wheeler ambulances have already served over 1000 people.

Kate Middleton and Prince William speak with medical staff and volunteers from across the Commonwealth, a year into the pandemic

The
Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spoke with medical, charity and voluntary staff from across the Commonwealth, and their conversations highlighted a cause that's important to them both: The intersections of the pandemic and mental health.
Kate and William had video calls with
Dr. Zolelwa Sifumba from South Africa,
Faysal Islam from Bangladesh and
Heidy Quah from Malaysia to hear about how the
coronavirus pandemic has affected front-line health-care workers there and what challenges it has given their mental well-being.
Zolelwa said prior to the pandemic, front-line staff were also exposed to occupational illnesses. She had a personal experience with multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis as a medical student. But COVID-19 has posed new challenges, and she said it's important for communities to give health care workers as much support as possible.

Safewheel, founded by  Rafiq Islam (Chief Executive Officer), Faysal Islam (Chief Business Development Officer) and Anas Hossain Makki (Chief Operating Officer), gained a wide audience in its formative days. What started out as an entry to the globally-renowned Hult Prize competition is now an internationally recognised social enterprise providing emergency medical transport services to rural Bangladesh. There are very few ambulance services in rural areas. Villagers rely on traditional three-wheelers, which can be life-threatening for patient transportation. Even if they get an ambulance, it is expensive. Team Safewheel wanted to create an affordable and innovative solution for the villagers.
