Of a sudden made a u-turn and got into a very big discussion about what s it doing, why is it behind us? it should be ahead of us. because they had one identifier on their route wrong. this is not a subtle system that there could be an no, they re going to see it, and with this left turn, it would be presented on their pfd. one last question for you, greg. that is, i ve been i ve tried to be very small c conservative in terms of figuring out what is real data, what s knowable, and what is speculation. it s hard to keep things straight because a lot of coverage on this is so hysterical. if information from the acars told us what we discussed about the fms, flight management system, if we got that data and it told us that much, is it going to tell us anything else? is there anything else from electronic data from that plane that s likely to give us any further information about what happened, or in your estimation, have we exhausted what we re going to be able to extract from ....

Senior officials leaking this information, that s really upset the malaysians to begin with, but this information really isn t vetted. the fact that this turn was supposedly conducted or at least initiated and executed by the fms system, it could have been done also by just the autopilot head itself. the fms system is the guidance system. you program in your route of flight and in this case it would have been to beijing. it would have had to have been reprogrammed and executed for this turn to occur. the turn was only about a 20 degree bank. that would have been a standard bank rate for an automated turn, whether it s the autopilot or the fms directing the autopilot to make that change. so just to slow down that point because the new york times and several news outlets are going big with this, what you re saying is even according to the information released it wouldn t necessarily require the kind of personal diversion of the pilot? it will require a pilot to have intervented. th ....

The flight management system, or fms. this is basically i guess you could say for this explanation, a gps. a very robust gps. but it works kind of like one in your car. would you pick out where you re headed, and you would enter that information. now, with the flight 370, they went from kuala lumpur to beijing, all the waypoints, all the information the aircraft needs to do that would be loaded in before the plane takes off. however, once they re in the air, it is possible to reprogram, choose a different waypoint, head in another direction. mitchell cassado, the pligilot,n demonstrate. absolutely. so this screen here, we have a potential this is our flight path. this triangle here, the apex of the triangle is us. to modify air path is very simple. all we do is enter the waypoint, or the destination where we want to go. and we enter into the computer. the computer then asks us if we want to verify that. and then we would go ahead and ....

There, some kind of catastrophic failure of systems could also have been responsible for that turn of the plane. here it s still possibe there was a fire or something that led a pilot or someone in the cockpit to it take that turn. but it looks unlikely now that you had a sudden failure, a sudden decompressionization of the plane. that kind of thing. they had the wherewithal and ability to plug into the flight management system or fms, to change direction. so it adds to the working theory. but again, more evidence there was a deliberate act involved in that turn. as opposed to some sort of catastrophic mechanical failure. or whatever. all right, thanks, jim sciutto, for that military radar in thailand seems to confirm what malaysian radar had also suspected, that a signal thought to be from the flight, flight 370, showed it was turning west. cnn now confirms the turn was likely and initiated by a computer in the cockpit. and a former malaysia airlines pilot tells cnn, the whole thing ....

Saddo. i m going ask, walk me through this, step by step, on how you reprogram a flight as the new york times is suggesting happened, and how one extra waypoint is entered in with the gear you have in front of you. sure. okay. that s what s so beautiful about having access to this simulator, it s a great way to show. this is the flight management system, fms. it is the latest focus right now as you described of the new york times. a lot of ways they described this thing, i guess you could say, the brain of the plane. it does a number of functions that really assist the pilot and co pilot of the aircraft. but i think the primary purpose here is navigation right now. and think of it as just a gps on steroids, just like in your car, you would program before you go somewhere. before we take off, before 370 took off, you would preprogram it to take you from kuala lumpur ....
