Australia Scraps Belt and Road Agreement as NZ Voices Caution Over Five Eyes Intel Alliance

Australia Scraps Belt and Road Agreement as NZ Voices Caution Over Five Eyes Intel Alliance
Posted by John Chan | Apr 22, 2021
The Australian federal government has used its expanded powers to terminate a Belt and Road infrastructure agreement between China and the state of Victoria. The move, announced on Wednesday, came amid the latest war of words between Australian and Chinese officials. Beijing has again blamed Canberra for the months-long deterioration of relations between the two countries. At the same time, it offered praise for New Zealand this week, after the country’s foreign minister voiced opposition to the expansion of the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance.

Scrapping of deals invites harm, says Beijing, as it vows a firm response
China on Thursday urged Australia to rectify its wrong decision to cancel two cooperation deals between the state of Victoria and China under the Belt and Road Initiative, and has vowed to make a firm response to the move.
China is dissatisfied with Australia's position and opposes its reversal of the deals, Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a daily news conference. China has lodged stern representations with Australia, he added.

Australia Will Not Surrender to Beijing: Defence Minister

Australia Will Not Surrender to Beijing: Defence Minister
Australian Defence Minister Peter Dutton has declared that the country will not surrender its sovereignty to appease Beijing following outrage over the cancellation of its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) agreement with Victoria.
The comments come after the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson threatened retaliation if Australia did not wind back its decision.
“We’re not going to have our values compromised. We aren’t going to surrender our sovereignty,” Dutton told Nine News on Friday.
“We are standing up for who we are. We’ve got very important diplomatic relations with many countries, including China, but we aren’t going to be compromised by the principles of the Communist Party of China.”

Australia's cancelling of BRI agreements benefits none: opinions - World News

SYDNEY, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Australian federal government's decision of tearing up Victoria State's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) agreements with China will bring negative impacts on the relations and cooperation between the two countries, according to influential social and official opinions in Australia.
"It's very hard to see any positive outlook for Australia-China relations, you know, given these latest developments," Professor James Laurenceson from the Australia-China Relations Institute of the University of Technology Sydney, told Xinhua.
The cooperation between the two countries in other fields may also be affected, which is unfavourable to both sides, the professor added.

Victoria responds to federal decision to axe Belt and Road deal with China

The Andrews government has responded to the federal government’s decision to scrap Victoria’s Belt and Road agreement with China - acknowledging the foreign Relations Act is a Commonwealth responsibility.

The controversial Belt and Road initiative involves a large-scale network of Chinese-funded infrastructure projects stretching from Asia to Europe.

The statement released by a spokesperson for the Victorian government said, “the Foreign Relations Act is entirely a matter for the Commonwealth government”.

“The Victorian government will continue to work hard to deliver jobs, trade and economic opportunities for our state."
