Few changes in America’s political culture in the past 100 years have been as profound as the changes in how Americans experience family life. Fewer marriages form. Marriage occurs later. Marriages are much more likely to end in divorce. Childlessness is much more common, as is living alone. The total fertility rate has dipped below replacement rates. Living together outside of wedlock has gone from forbidden to rare to almost expected, perhaps as a prelude to marriage and perhaps not. Surveys show that family no longer has a hold on the human heart as it once did.
Adrian Vermeule’s Common Good Constitutionalism represents his version of the left’s “living Constitution.” Few people will embrace his self-serving theory, which is tailor-made to accommodate both his beloved administrative state and integralist moral philosophy—a peculiar combination.
Can America overcome the progressive left's Constitution, which has partially usurped the Founders’ Constitution? It is a tall order.
One day in 1990, Victor Fuentes dove into the ocean from Cuba and swam seven miles to the American naval base on Guantanamo Bay, where he would beg for political asylum. He was, as the now-deceased Peter Schramm would have said, ‘born American, but in the wrong place.’ Fuentes arrived in America in 1991 and started his life over. He became a born-again Christian and a pastor. He would establish Solid Rock Ministries on 40 acres of land outside of Las Vegas with the purpose of healing the addicts and broken lives cast off by “Sin City.”
