Gilles Pialoux, Head of Infectious Diseases at a Paris hospital, added: “It’s considered a variant to investigate, it’s not in the same level as the South African variant. We need more information.
“We need information to know if it’s more transmissible but it’s complicated because there are few cases.”
France had resisted calls for a new lockdown as daily cases reach over 20,000.
Hospitals in Paris have resorted to airlifting patients to rural medical facilities as their ICU wards reach capacity.

France threatens to sue AstraZeneca as row erupts over jabs shipments | Politics | News

“And more than that, probably a number of breaches of contract.
“Europe is not going to be some sort of cuddly ‘care bear’ that hands over its money and expects nothing in return.”
AstraZeneca has slashed its forecasts for the number of coronavirus vaccines it expects to deliver to member states by the end of the month.
The drugs giant expects only 30 million doses, a third of its contractual obligations, according to an internal document.

Likewise, Italy is also blocking UK arrivals with a few exceptions.
"From March 6 until April 6, entry into Italy is only permitted to residents or those with absolute necessity including urgent work, health needs or study requirements," the FCDO said.
Tough requirements are in place, too. "Until April 6, those wishing to fly must present the airline with a negative COVID-19 rapid antigenic or molecular swab test taken no more than 48 hours before entry into Italy," said the FCDO.
"You must also take a COVID-19 rapid antigenic or molecular swab test within 48 hours of entering Italy - arrivals by air from the UK will take this test at the airport.

Emmanuel Macron savaged over 'dangerous' vaccine claims | World | News

Since then, a leading study found the vaccine has a 76 percent efficacy against infections three months after the single dose, and another extensive trial found the jab reduced the risk of hospitalisation by 94 percent.
Sir Patrick Vallance, the UK Government's chief scientific adviser, said it is "clear that AstraZeneca works and it works in older people".
Political commentator Douglas Murray branded Mr Macron’s previous comments about the vaccine as “dangerous” and hit out at the French leader for not issuing an apology.
The British author added his remarks came amid a wave of vaccine scepticism in France and highlighted a poll that suggested just 40 percent of people would take the jab.

France has seen the Kent variant of coronavirus become one of the most prevalent strains of Covid in the past few weeks, with the mutation reported to be behind 20 to 25 percent of new infections. Despite the "worrying evolution" the disease has gone through, Emmanuel Macron has repeatedly rejected suggestions to put France under a third national lockdown. According to an Elisée insider, President Macron believed "there is a path" to ensure the country can escape another general shut down despite the growing impact of foreign strains on new cases.

The French President criticised the UK's approach to vaccinations last month after British health chiefs decided to delay second doses for up to 12 weeks. He said: "When you have all the health agencies and the manufacturers who are telling you that for it to work you have to have two injections with a maximum of 28 days between the two, as is the case with Pfizer/BioNTech, and you have countries that have a vaccination strategy of only giving one injection, I am not sure that it's totally serious.
