Booming podcast industry comes of age with Ambies awards show

The newly formed Podcast Academy this weekend hands out its first awards, the Ambies, for the best in a booming industry that has room for everyone from Prince Harry and Kim Kardashian to a student with a smart phone. "People can try it without having to invest a lot of money, whereas if you want to make a TV show you can't just go do that," said Donald Albright, chairman of the Podcast Academy. The Podcast Academy on Sunday will hand out statuettes in 23 categories ranging from sports and true crime to spirituality and comedy. ....

Jury finds man guilty of murder by abuse in relative s death

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) A Linn County Circuit Court jury has found a man guilty of murder in the death of a relative.
Chad Cheever was found guilty Wednesday of murder by abuse and assault in the 2018 death 60-year-old Don Whisenhunt, The Albany Democrat-Herald reported.
Cheever was the nephew of Whisenhunt’s ex-wife and was living with Whisenhunt in Tangent at the time.
The jury reached the verdict in just under three hours Wednesday.
Tami Fulbright, Whisenhunt’s daughter, pleaded guilty to criminal mistreatment in Whisenhunt’s death in 2019. Fulbright withheld necessary and adequate medical treatment from Whisenhunt and the jury found Cheever was similarly neglectful. ....

La Sapienza honours Sofia Corradi, inventor of Erasmus.
Sofia Corradi, the Italian inventor of the Erasmus student exchange programme in the European Union, will receive an honorary doctorate in social psychology at La Sapienza University in Rome on 20 April.
Born in the Italian capital in 1934, Corradi is known as Mamma Erasmus for her ground-breaking idea of promoting cultural, social and academic exchanges between European students.
Corradi studied law at La Sapienza in the 1960s before furthering her studies at Colombia University in the US thanks to a Fulbright scholarship.
She conceived the Erasmus idea on her return to Rome, in 1969, after her Master s degree from abroad was not recognised in Italy. ....

Andrew Giarelli is a Prague-based and Slovakia-loving Italian-American journalist. His latest novel, The Talking Statues, explores the long-standing tradition of Rome’s Pasquinate, a form of satire posted in public spaces. Named after Pasquino, a marble statue unveiled in Rome in 1501, the centuries-old tradition of posting these verses on “talking statues” continues to this day.
