Opening statement. Todays hearing of on current and ongoing voting discrimination is part of the house judiciary subcommittee on constitution, civil rights and Civil Liberties over the course of this year to assess the current need for a reinvigoration of the requirement of section 5 of the Voting Rights act. To consider other ways to strengthen that civil rights statue. Im not sure why we say reinvigoration. That seems to be one of the words we tossed around. Section 4 was cut out so we need to have a section 4 to activate section 5. Section 5 has been made dormant by the Supreme Court saying section 4 wasnt adequate so we need to find a new test to awaken the dormant power of section 5. Voting rights act of 65 is widely considered the most effective civil rights statute ever enacted by congress to protect the fundamenta ....

This morning, we have new aerial video to show you of this firefight. This is burning in a remote part of the merit island preserve on the southwestern tip of the preserve. It is not threatening any buildings or homes on merit island. It is an air are i cant that is step with heavy brush and veg taig, its been difficult to access some of the fire. It has burned 7 acres since 3 00 this morning. The fire is a percent contained according to firefighters so its not spreading out of control, just accessing it has been difficult. They do have hydrant service on merit island, the challenge for firefighters have running fire hoses to get access to the flames, firefighters tell us this fire was started by someone who intentionally cut power poles causing lines to come down and spark the fire. Can you clearly see someone tried to saw into the sides of the power pole there and caused the line to droop, the fire investigator believes someone who did this may have been trying to steal copper wiring ....
