Pro-Yang PACs take shape as the mayor's race enters prime time

NEW YORK — The money race is heating up in New York’s mayoral primary.
A top-tier political consultant is launching an effort to boost Andrew Yang’s candidacy with a goal of raising $6 million for TV ads — one of at least three political action committees in the works to propel the current front runner to City Hall.
Lis Smith, a senior adviser to Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign, is in talks with potential donors and staff about forming a PAC that would operate outside the city’s strict campaign finance limits to counter negative advertising against Yang, several people familiar with the calls told POLITICO.

Left leaning PAC to deploy policy poll in making case against Yang
As the primary race for New York City mayor heads into the final 10 weeks, a left-leaning group — buoyed by a new poll showing popularity for its chief policy goals — is gearing up to make a public case against frontrunner Andrew Yang.
The political action committee “Our City” recently commissioned a survey that found 56 percent of likely voters are unsure who to back in the eight-way Democratic primary — a race Yang has dominated since his entry in January. But the same 509 voters said they are looking for a candidate committed to shifting resources away from the NYPD, expanding affordable housing and increasing taxes on high earners to underwrite the city’s recovery from Covid-19.

A candidate for a New York City Council seat left vacated in the Bronx is getting a six-figure boost in his run, in part because of contributions from the world's wealthiest woman, according to campaign filings.
John Sanchez, a candidate in the crowded 15th Council District special election, received a helping hand from New Yorkers for a Balanced Albany, a super PAC that formed in 2014. Its chief donor is Alice Walton, the billionaire heir to the family-owned Walmart corporation and the world's richest woman whose net worth stands at $62.3 billion, according to estimates reported by Forbes Magazine in 2020. The contributions once again demonstrate the presence of big money this election cycle, in which the mega-rich have begun flexing their financial muscle in even the smallest of races.

Who's got the money and who's got momentum?

10 things to know about the latest filing
This week marked the massive information dump the New York City Campaign Finance Board calls “the filing deadline.” There are enough tidbits and storylines to last us politicos two months until the next one on May 21, but here are 10 things that immediately stood out.
Adams has the money
With $7.6 million on hand, Eric Adams is the undisputed money king of the mayoral race. Scott Stringer is in a not-so-distant second with $6.85 million. Andrew Yang raised an impressive $2.14 million in just two months, but he won’t be eligible to receive his $4.73 million in expected public matching funds until April 15 at the earliest.

"The Most Expensive Election In NYC History": Why Deep-Pocketed PACs Are Laser Focused On City Council Races

The future of New York City will in many ways begin to take shape in the June primary, when more than 30 New York City council seats and the race for mayor will be largely decided. As we saw with the recent special election of the 24th Council District in Queens, super PACs -- which can spend unlimited money on messaging to support a candidate -- could play a major role.
Gabe Tobias, a political strategist who helped catapult Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to victory in 2018, is now the director of the recently formed progressive PAC called Our City, which is aimed at supporting upwards of 15 Council candidates. Our City is now vetting more than 350 candidates to determine who best fits their values, and looks to raise a total of $5 million in support of candidates.
