Nonprofit helping families afford summer camps

Many Colorado families struggle to afford pricey summer camps. A nonprofit is footing the bill for hundreds
ReSchool Colorado will connect nearly 800 kids to summer learning and fun, helping them overcome an opportunity gap that extends from the school year into summer.

LAFAYETTE, Colo. — For many Colorado kids, options for summer break are limitless, from day and overnight camps to trips to museums and zoos. But for others, summer comes with far fewer opportunities, boiling down to those that are low cost or no cost.
In many cases, how students spend their summer is dictated by the kinds of activities, camps and learning experiences that their families can afford. The sharp differences in opportunities that kids can access during the school year are mirrored, if not magnified, during June, July and August.

Spirit week fails to bring enthusiasm to Staples

Staples’ superfan captains organized a belated spirit week, April 26 – 30, since they were unable to have it when it typically occurs in October during the week of homecoming due to COVID-19. The spirit week consisted of pajama day, color wars by grade level, nationality day, twin day and Staples spirit day.
Spirit week was coordinated by the superfan captains, yet the students and staff did not dress up as enthusiastically as seen in the past.
“I showed up to school on Monday wearing a pink pajama set looking like I had just rolled out of bed,” Gaby Gonzalez ’22 said. “To my surprise, nobody was dressed up and I was totally embarrassed about my outfit for the day.”

2021 Election: Special library district has full slate of candidates

UMATILLA COUNTY — Voters will have an opportunity to cast their votes for three candidates for the Umatilla County Special Library District Board of Directors.
A trio of three candidates — incumbent John Thomas, Caleb Barron and Sharone Pettus McCann — are each vying for a four-year term. Two candidates from the field will gain a seat on the board.
The other board position currently on the ballot is the remaining two years of the term previously held by Kara Davis, who left Dec. 31, 2020, when moving out of the area for a new job. Candidates for that single position are Jubilee Barron, Gaby Gonzalez and Fatima Machado.

Athletes adjust to COVID-19 college recruiting regulations

Many Staples athletes have dedicated long days and countless hours to the sport they love. For some, it is in hopes of commiting to play at the collegiate level.
Whether it’s division I, II or III, all athletes have to go through a lengthy process to finally commit to play in college. The committing process has dramatically changed during COVID-19, as many regulations have been implemented. This has impacted many of our own athletes at Staples High School.
Gaby Gonzalez ’22 committed on Aug.11 to play soccer at Cornell University.
“COVID has impacted the recruiting process because […] coaches were unable to see me play in person,” Gonzalez said.
