Print As COVID-19 decimated the Los Angeles restaurant industry, downtown’s Little Tokyo found itself particularly hard hit, as did similar enclaves of mom-and-pop eateries. Language, cultural and technological barriers made it difficult for some to adjust to the pandemic realities of delivery and takeout. Bottom lines shrank severely. Now, Little Tokyo’s 1st Street is filled with people eating on tables extending past the curb into the street. Ted Danson, Kristen Bell and Darius Rucker Join Virtual Fundraiser for LA Family Housing COURTESY OF LA FAMILY HOUSING Don t believe the lie that homelessness is an unsolvable problem. It is completely solvable, said event co-chair and veteran marketing executive Blair Rich during Thursday night s Home Together event. Stephanie Klasky-Gamer said that if someone told her a year ago that LA Family Housing would be hosting its second annual virtual fundraiser Home Together this week, she would not have believed them. But facts are facts and since the COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing and homelessness in L.A. is worse than ever, the organization once again took its marquee fundraiser online.
After months of waiting, south LA County bakery star Colossus Bread has opened in Long Beach. The new shop at 4716 2nd Street is the second storefront for owners Kristin Colazas Rodriguez and Nicholas Rodriguez, following fresh on the heels of their popular (and much smaller) bakery in San Pedro, which opened in 2019. The Long Beach area locals have long wanted to return to LBC proper with a shop of their own, and after months of frustrating delays they’ve now opened the doors to their new Belmont Shore home. “We’ve wanted to open in Long Beach since the beginning,” Colazas Rodriguez told Eater earlier this year. “It’s actually been a part of my business plan since the beginning.” There’s good reason too, considering Colossus’s smaller beginnings as a farmers market stand back in the day. Since then the team has not only maintained a nostalgic pull to the community, they’ve also continued to hear from customers eager to have them back.
