UC research team uses zebrafish to study a gene mutation that causes congenital scoliosis

UC research team uses zebrafish to study a gene mutation that causes congenital scoliosis
Popular in aquariums all over the world, the zebrafish is native to South Asia. But here in a Cincinnati Children s laboratory, the freshwater variant plays a vital role in scientific discovery.
The iconic stripes are eye-catching but it s the transparency of zebrafish embryonic tissue which are most prized by researchers like Oriana Zinani, a fifth-year doctoral student in molecular developmental biology in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. The patterning of the zebrafish s spine gives the appearance of stripes; it is controlled by segmentation genes which function like a clock. ....

Researchers use SARS-CoV-2 to bioengineer universal vaccine platform

Researchers use SARS-CoV-2 to bioengineer universal vaccine platform
A team of scientists from the United States has recently developed a bioengineered bacteriophage T4 nanoparticle structure using CRISPR technology that can be used as a universal platform to produce vaccines. They used severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) as a model to develop the platform. The study is currently available on the
Design of T4-SARS-CoV-2 nanovaccine by CRISPR engineering. Engineered DNAs corresponding to various components of SARS-CoV-2 virion are incorporated into bacteriophage T4 genome. Each DNA was introduced into E. coli as a donor plasmid (a), recombined into injected phage genome through CRISPR-targeted genome editing (b). Different combinations of CoV-2 inserts were then generated by simple phage infections and identifying the recombinant phages in the progeny (c). For example, recombinant phage containing CoV-2 insert #1 (dark blue) can be used to infect C ....

The Massive Genome of The Lungfish May Explain How We Made The Leap to Land

The Massive Genome of The Lungfish May Explain How We Made The Leap to Land
20 JANUARY 2021
If you are a lucky species, you will stumble into random gene mutations that just happen to help you survive better - allowing you and your descendants to keep and build on the helpful traits they encode. As with anything involving luck, the more chances you take, the more chances you have of hitting the jackpot.

That s what seems to have happened with our long-ago ancestors - the ones we share with still living lungfish. They struck enough genetic jackpots to allow them to climb out of the water and access the whole new world of land, around 420 million years ago.  ....
