Tokyo Olympics: Coach confident OlyWhites squad will be close to the strongest possible

Danny Hay is confident the OlyWhites squad for the Tokyo Olympics will be as strong as possible.
The last time the OlyWhites took part in the Olympic men’s football tournament, in London in 2012, a third of their 18-strong squad were playing in amateur competitions in New Zealand.
Nine years on, when they head to the Tokyo Olympics in July, there are likely to be several overseas-based professionals who miss out – a sign of the progress that has been made during the 2010s.
With their opponents, South Korea, Honduras, and Romania, now locked in, coach Danny Hay has a little over two months to finalise his 18-man squad, which will consist predominantly of under-24 players (those born in 1997 or later), but can also include three over-age players, and his four travelling reserves, who can only be called on as injury replacements.

Matchweek 15 wrapped up on Wednesday, April 7 after a six-day, nine-game football feast which began and concluded with Central Coast Mariners on top of the pile.
Sydney FC snuck into the top four after two Matchweek 15 wins over Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory. Melbourne City had the chance to overthrow the Mariners at the top but a 2-1 loss to Western United stopped Patrick Kisnorbo's side in their tracks. City did, however, respond well to defeat by edging Wellington Phoenix 3-2 on Monday night.
Macarthur FC dealt Perth the first of their two defeats for the Matchweek to go three games unbeaten - the Bulls now occupy third spot on the table.

Wanderers and Mariners play out four goal thriller

Mariners captain Oliver Bozanic slotted home a penalty with seven minutes remaining to earn the visitors a point in a contest they largely dominated.
The draw takes last season's wooden-spooners three points clear at the top, though having played two matches more than second-placed Melbourne City.
After a Matt Simon goal in the first half, the impressive Mariners created enough chances to be well out of sight before substitute Bruce Kamau bagged two goals within four second-half minutes against the run of play.
Gosford-local Simon looked set to be the hero, netting midway through the first half until Kamau finally drew the home side level with 16 minutes remaining.

Wanderers coach Robinson 'embarrassed' by VAR

The A-League leaders were awarded a late penalty in a hugely entertaining contest on Tuesday at Parramatta's Bankwest Stadium.
Oliver Bozanic slotted home the 83rd-minute spot kick to earn the Mariners a deserved 2-2 draw, following a lengthy VAR review which saw referee Chris Beath determine Keanu Bacchus had fouled Mariners forward Alou Koul.
The penalty was just one component of a frantic finale to the match that saw three goals in the final 16 minutes, a catalogue of missed goalscoring opportunities, a header against the crossbar from Wanderers defender Tom Aquilina and a red card after the fulltime whistle for the home side's assistant coach.

Injury blow for OlyWhites as the scale of their task at the Tokyo Olympics becomes clear

Coach Danny Hay is looking forward to the OlyWhites having an “acid test” at the Tokyo Olympics in July.
New Zealand’s under-24 men’s football team could find themselves in a pool with Brazil and Germany at the Tokyo Olympics in July, or with Argentina and Spain, or – in a worst-case scenario – with hosts Japan, Mexico, and France.
And they won’t be able to call on All Whites midfielder Ryan Thomas as they come face to face with some of the world’s elite footballing nations, as his season-ending ankle injury and surgery have ruled him out of contention for one of the three over-age spots on offer.

Matchweek 12 of the 2020/21 A-League campaign comes to a close with Central Coast Mariners six points clear at the top of the table.
The Gosford side drew 2-2 with Perth Glory on Sunday afternoon. Wins to Western Sydney Wanders, Adelaide United and Melbourne City helped the three teams placed second to fourth marginally close the gap on the league-leaders.
Sydney FC beat Newcastle Jets 2-1 to move into fifth, whilst Macarthur FC fell from second to sixth after losing 3-0 to City.
Melbourne Victory, meanwhile, remain bottom of the table after a 3-1 Original Rivalry loss to the Reds. Grant Brebner's side remain on seven points, four points behind both Newcastle and Wellington Phoenix who lost to the Sky Blues and Wanderers respectively in Matchweek 12.

Stajcic - Mariners take confidence to Melbourne as blockbuster clash with City awaits

Central Coast Mariners boss Alen Stajcic says Melbourne City are currently the form team of the competition - but that won't knock his side's confidence heading into the clash between two top-three sides at AAMI Park in Matchweek 13.
The Mariners drew 2-2 with ninth-placed Perth Glory on Sunday night. The league-leaders had to dig deep to earn just one point from the clash, scoring in the 91st-minute from the penalty spot to salvage a draw in wet and windy Gosford conditions.
The result leaves Central Coast seven points ahead of City on the table, who have played two fewer games than Stajcic's side.

ABC Pod: Duke reveals extent of Saudi struggles as Garb, Cornthwaite unwrap sensational Matchweek 7

Duke returns to Wanderland after three-week battle with parent club
"It was a genuine conversation. I assumed they were going to take my word seriously and give me a chance as a striker, but instead they turned it against me."
12 games into his stint at Saudi Professional League side Al-Taawoun, Duke knew he was in need of a change of scenery.
Living away from family and friends and playing on the wing for the Saudi side - as opposed to his preferred position as a number nine - Duke approached the club to ask for his chance spearheading the attack.
