Several police departments across Connecticut have brought on support dogs trained by incarcerated people in New York and New Jersey. The dogs learn specialized commands that help them support citizens and officers. The dogs have been a resource for police officers in Bristol during some of the department’s darkest days.

“It’s a start of a relationship with Public Safety,” said Detective Sergeant Al Flanders on how his furry partner Coach bridges the gap between community members and PSAFE. A beloved sight on campus, the Labrador Retriever works hard to destress students everywhere from McCosh infirmary to zee group events.

They both received their basic training from prisoners, out of a program called Puppies Behind Bars. The ATF then trained them in their specialties.

“Coach’s only job is to make people feel better,” said Public Safety Sgt. Alvan Flanders. “Everywhere we go, people stop her for a pet, belly rub, hug or handshake. She’s the friendliest dog.”
