While cross-examining a witness for the Justice Department, John Schmidtlein, Google's lead trial lawyer, tried to describe how this suit differed from the landmark antitrust case brought against Microsoft in the 1990s. The barriers to competition in search today, Schmidtlein said, are less daunting than Microsoft's stranglehold on personal computer software.
Google's lawyers are set to wrap up their arguments in the case -- US et al. v. Google -- on Tuesday, which will be followed by a government rebuttal. Judge Amit Mehta of US District Court for the District of Columbia, who is presiding over the nonjury trial, is expected to deliver a verdict next year after both sides summarize their cases in writing and deliver closing arguments.
On Monday, Epic Games, the company behind the hit game Fortnite, will appear in federal court in San Francisco to kick off a monthlong trial in its own antitrust lawsuit against Google. Epic is expected to argue that Google is violating both state and federal antitrust laws by wielding monopolistic power over app developers on its Google Play Store on Android mobile phones.
