이같은 요청은 스피어스가 아버지의 법정후견인 지위를 박탈하기를 원하다는 입장 발표에 이은 조치다.
NYT에 따르면 스피어스 측 매튜 로젠가트 변호사는 이날 법원에서 브리트니 스피어스의 자산을 관리할 새 후견인으로 제이슨 루빈 회계사를 추천했다.
로젠가트 변호사는 스피어스의 아버지인 제이미 스피어스의 후견인 박탈을 요구하는 탄원서도 제출했다. 다만 이 문건은 공개되지 않았다.
브리트니 스피어스는 최근 법정에서 아버지의 후견인 지위를 끝내고 싶고, 그를 학대 혐의로 기소하고 싶다고 말한 바 있다. 스피어스는 지난 6월 법정에서의 연설에서 후견인 제도가 모욕적이고 굴욕적이었다고 말했다.
이 연설로 스피어스는 대중의 지지를 얻었다. 패리스 힐튼, 베트 미들러, 마일리 사이러스 등의 유명인사들도 그녀의 편에 섰다. 스피어스의 부친은 2008년 딸의 정신적 문제를 거론하며 후견인 지위를 얻었고, 13년간 자유와 재산을 통제했다는 게 스피어스 측 주장이다. 그녀의 정신건강 문제는 자세히 알려진 바 없다.
스피어스는 지난 18일 인스타그램 게시물을 통해 “아버지가 내가 입고 말하고 생각하는 것을 계속 통제하는 한 어떤 무대에서도 공연하지 않을 것”이라고 하기도 했다. 스피어스는 2018년 말 이후 공연을 하지 않고 있다.
스피어스의 법정후견인 지위를 심리하는 다음 청문회는 9월29일에 열린다.
