To promote handlooms, a two-week state handloom expo 'Hathkargha Varanasi' is being organised by the Directorate of Handloom and Textile Industries, UP at Urban Haat, Cultural Complex in Chowkaghat area from January 15. The expo, which will continue till January 28, has been sponsored by the Development Commissioner (Handloom), Ministry of Textiles. Free stalls have been allotted to societies and organisations to display their handcrafted goods.

The handloom industry, a more than 2,000-year-old craft, has mostly relied on government support in Tamil Nadu. Mechanization and the rise of powerlooms have shifted the focus away from handlooms towards mass production with manmade fibres. To revive the industry, the Tamil Nadu government plans to establish 10 mini handloom parks across the state. These parks will bring handloom weavers together and enable them to produce niche products based on market demand.

dressfolk: Ethical clothing brand Dressfolk raise seed funding by All In Capital among other investors

Indian ethical clothing brand Dressfolk has raised INR 3.3 crore ($440,000) in a seed funding round led by All In Capital.
