Wednesday notes:
WILLSON!: Willson Contreras has homered in two of his last four games and three of his last nine contests, and his 16 home runs this season lead all NL catchers.
EVEN-UP: Since the Cubs’ 11-game losing streak ended, they are 8-8. The Reds are also 8-8 in that time span. So are the Dodgers, and in the same time frame the Mets are 9-9. The Cubs have almost kept pace with the Brewers, who are 8-7 over that time period.
SAVING GAMES: Five Cubs pitchers have saves this year (Craig Kimbrel, Alec Mills, Ryan Tepera, Rex Brothers and Keegan Thompson). The Cubs also had five pitchers with saves last year, but in 2019 nine different Cubs posted saves (Kimbrel, Mills, Pedro Strop, Brandon Kintzler, David Phelps, Allen Webster, Rowan Wick, Steve Cishek and Tyler Chatwood). Nine is the record for the most in a single season in Cubs history since the save rule went into effect in 1969, tied with 1970 (Ted Abernathy, Hank Aguirre, Jim Colborn, Larry Gura, Bill Hands, Bob Miller, Juan Pizarro, Phil Regan and Roberto Rodriguez).

Making the All-Star team in Major League Baseball is never easy, but it was even more difficult if you were an outfielder in the National League in the 1960s and early 1970s.
...
Billy Williams appeared in his first All-Star Game in 1962 and his last in 1973.
During those 12 years, his regular-season slash line was .299/.366/.508. His OPS+ was 137.
He batted at least .300 in 5 seasons, with a high of .333 that won the league batting title in 1972.
He rapped out at least 200 hits 3 times, including a Major League-best 205 in 1970.
He averaged 29 home runs, had at least 30 in 5 seasons and had a career high of 42 in 1970.

Ernie Banks vs. American League pitchers

There was no interleague play during Ernie Banks' 19-year career, and the Cubs never reached the World Series.
So "Mr. Cub" never faced any of his era's top American League pitchers in a game that mattered.
But he did bat against some top AL hurlers in All-Star Games.
I wondered how Banks fared when he was matched up with those pitchers in the annual midseason exhibition game.
..........
He batted
.303, compared to a regular-season average of .274. His 10 hits in 33 at bats included a home run, a triple and 3 doubles.
