Pennsylvania is considered among a handful of states that have a realistic chance of legalizing recreational marijuana in 2023. Governor Josh Shapiro is supports legalization of adult-use cannabis and expungement for low-level offenders, noting the promise of new tax revenue and progress toward the goals of restorative justice. For the first time in 12 years, Democrats are poised to take control of the state House of Representatives, giving the initiative more fuel than in years past.

Some politicians, like John McCain, got away with parachuting into a new state, while others, like Mehmet Oz, got slapped silly.

Pennsylvania's current marijuana laws are among the strictest in the country, as the Marijuana Policy Project said in its most recent report on legalization policy. The organization tracked 19 states whose legalization policy lags the most behind its residents' public opinion.
