HIBBING â The Hibbing City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved purchasing 25 body cameras for officers to equip its police department. Police Chief Steve Estey told the Mesabi Tribune that those numbers ensure all uniformed police officers and investigators will have a camera. The chief placed the $68,000 order including installation from the Aurora-based Rogerâs Online Corporation on Thursday. By buying the body cameras, Hibbingâs police department â the largest on the Iron Range â becomes the latest agency to adopt the technology. Virginia Police Chief Nicole Mattson has told the Mesabi Tribune via email that her officers have had body cameras âfor two years and they are integrated with our in-car cameras.â Estey, an ex-Virginia detective, wrote in an email that his former department uses the Watchguard system and his officers will do the same.

There was a drive-by parade and military program to celebrate the 100th birthday of Joe Berklich in Hibbing. Berklich said he didn’t feel 100, more like 80. He said the secret to reaching age 100 was to stay active. Berklich worked 43 years for U-S Steel, was the longtime president of the Hibbing Curling Club, and served on the Hibbing City Council. Congressman Pete Stauber’s office said a flag flying over the U-S Capitol Wednesday was in Berklich’s honor and will be delivered to him.

But cities like Hibbing, which relied heavily on stable property taxes, taconite funding and implementing saving strategies, have managed to stay in a strong position â for now. The Hibbing City Council on Wednesday night adopted an estimated $22 million budget for 2021, up about 2 percent from 2020, according to City Clerk-Treasurer Mary Ann Kepler. Councilors approved general-fund expenditures at about $19.4 million, an increase of 2.7 percent percent from last year.
